Festival of worshipping shakti. – Navratri
India is a land of many cultures, traditions and religions. With different culture and religion come different festivals. The word ‘festival’ is so rich, so deep and so positively associated with life that we cannot live devoid of it. The season of festival that started with Janmastmi in last month is in full bloom with arrival of ‘Navratra’. If we compare a year to the stages of life then we can say that a year born with Janamastmi, gets in youth at Navaratri, achieves marriage like celebrations in diwali, reaches at it peak years during Uttarayan and Holi and gradually goes to end with happy memories of this festivals, just to take birth again from new year.
India is blessed to be bestowed by so rich and so varied festivals which makes life worth living. Every region has its own celebrations and festivals at almost co-inciding intervals. No other country in the world can boast of so varied and so rich festivals. May be these festivals are the reason which has still kept the core of Indian culture alive and kicking. These festivals have assumed great significance in Indian life and they are more so needed in times like this when we are searching for hope and happiness amid issues of corruption, scams, traffics and global volatility.
It is the festival of worshipping the “shakti” personified as MAA JAGAD AMBA. These nine days are dedicated for worship in the form of Puja, aarti, fasts and GArba. It makes this worship very unique as there are very rare occasion on when worship is done by Dance. Worshipping is generally conceived as a session which is full of rituals, enchantings done in isolation or silence. But Garba occupies a very unique place in worshipping as it brings out the ‘energy’ in a form of dance and connects to the youth who might not understand the significance of worshipping.
This festival has a deep meaning and significance, if we see it apart from religious angle. It helps people bring their withheld energies out. It helps gaining oneself a very much awaited break from a daily routine life. This festival is of love, friendship , togetherness and of all the qualities that can make life beautiful. Ask the persons who have enjoyed garba all night in a group and how comfortable they feel in company of each other which otherwise they won’t have. Garba has given me many moments which are best ones of my life. This festival has a moments which are desired by children, adults and elder ones.It also has many health benefits and it burns lot of calories while you dance for 2-3 hours continuously. It helps your feet, hand and waist keep moving which otherwise would have got accustomed seating in cozy chair and A.C. car.
From spiritual angle it is one of the most enriching experience. Doing aarti & stuti daily for nine days in a group is something which adds to persons spiritual strength and stability. The stuti & aarti of goddess is full divinity and submission to the goddess. Garba as a form of divine dance provides an excellent platform to worship that supreme power of universe. Dance has been a form of worship which has been in practice since ancient times and this traditional form of dance allows common persons to experience divinity. Dance has also been a medium of expression for many and it provides chance and power to express oneself without a need to being understood.
Everyone will have their own versions and angle for describing this dance. But I am sure the person who has played it by immersing itself in it, without any motive of creating impression or competition, it would have been best moments of his life which will want to repeat everytime he gets a chance…. Come experience Garba, Do Garba…!!
