One fine morning the newspaper headline reads “Kejriwal, Salman Khurshid, Digvijay singh and Baba Ramdev to enter Big Boss House !!”
“This can’t be true. But it should happen” I felt and I was certainly excited with even the remotest possibility of it happening. How can you imagine such highly visible personalities with contrasting mindsets in a single enclosed house hosting a television reality show?
My mind immediately started wandering about the immensely fruitful opportunity of eradicating corruption in an entertaining manner. At the back of my mind it was a quiet acknowledgement of the fact that if we can bring people together on a table which can establish direct eye contacts, then probably the issues would settle more fast and amicably without loss of time, egos and prime national airtime. Even if the issues remain unsolved atleast we will get the sense, who stands for what value. Currently we, the Indian public has probably lost sense of differentiating among politicians. For us all of them are either frauds, goons or incapables.
Soon the visuals are constructed of a Big Boss house with members like Arvind Kejriwal, Baba Ramdev, Salman Khurshid , Digvijay Singh. What would they talk about? What are they wearing? What are the tasks given to them? Will they cooperate? etc. etc. Arvind Kejriwal probably would be the one who will enjoy being in the house and torture everybody in the house by its pressing questions on corruptions. While Digvijay singh will have difficult time shooting off the outrageously irrelevant sentences which till date have worked as an effective way to divert attention from the real issue. (I think he intelligently makes such statements to divert the issue). Baba Ramdev would be a confused team mate in the house because he might not be able to decide, whether to fight corruption with Kejriwal or wage his own battle which might not have intellectual sharpness. He might end up teaching yoga to other team mates for healthy and peaceful mind. Salman Khurshid on the other hand might have a tough time staying in the house and might file a case of defaming him against Big boss itself !!
Differences among popular names which are glaringly displayed in public for entertainment value has interested more people than the issue itself. It has always served as a ‘Masala’ in otherwise boring lives of Mango men. The interest and anxiety gets multiplied if it is linked to the ongoing war of “good” v/s “evil”. We the people of India, have always considered quick achievers and overnight millionaires as prima facie unscrupulous persons who have used illegitimate means to achieve wealth. (This might be true with some exceptions). And because of this feeling we always enjoy engaging in the passive war over these ‘evils’ by watching live news, Facebook updates, Tweets etc. and each new update will give us sensational satisfaction on unfolding of evils. We are not there to wait for the final results or justice but for the quick consumption of this sensationalism. And it is what we all are interested in, barring few.
Being a democracy, India needs a little more direct dialogue. More forums wherein the dissenting voices can argue one-on-one and people then can see who stands for what. (You can take example of presidential run-offs between Obama and Romney.) Currently what we are seeing is everybody talking and nobody listening. Every political party and news channels are digging skeletons of scams (which is good in a way) and creating a new issue to be fiercely debated on news tonight. No issue is brought to its logical conclusion. It is brought out, discussed and then ? Forgotten. Today where is the agitation of Janlokpal ? Instead of institutionalizing the investigation and justice mechanism we are more interested in portraying how bad our leaders and systems are. And at this point the role of government becomes extremely important so that nobody loses the confidence in our institutions, which are very much the pillars of functional democracy
Big boss brings out the real self of its residents. People have shown their true colors during their stay in the house. If we put such different personalities which have importance in nation building in house of Big boss, I think it will benefit the Indian public most. Because we will know them in their true self and values. We will know the real persons for whom we vote but we know so little. But there needs to be some modifications in the rules, otherwise Arvind kejriwals’ would the first ones to be voted out of the house.
Still I was holding paper in my hand, not reading the news but thinking, and it struck to me. Why can’t we make Indian Parliament sessions also like house of Big boss? They stay together, work together, understand each other, discuss the matters, resolve differences and all this is viewed by public. Till the time the issue is not resolved no going home. Instead of disruptions and slogan shouting why our parliament cannot become a really interesting place which works jointly as a team for nation building. If Big Boss without any nation building value is liked by public I am sure such parliament would be superhit TRP garner.
It is a dream, there is no such newspaper with such headlines. But the dream is born out of a desire to see our leaders as true representatives of Mango men instead of representatives of political funding. But still there is a hope that we will come over this phase, still we are a young democracy figuring out the right path. America fought its bloodiest civil war after almost 100 years of democratic freedom to rewrite the constitution, we are still 67 only !!!
