We witnessed a historic moment today. An Indian democracy, took a silent turn which can potentially alter future of billion+ people. Delhi is attempting to bring in different form of politics, which is not based on caste, religion, region, but on issues concerning to governance, corruption and development. It has brought in a hope for intelligent and honest people to come and participate in democratic process of government formation. It has shown that ‘Aam Admi’ can also get himself elected. It has attempted to break free from a culture where ‘Politician is not poor and no poor is Politician’. Arvind Kejriwal and his team has brought indeed a hope, for a real common man without political connections, who actually does the normal works (farming, teaching, farming, business etc.) for economic upliftment and getting joys of life.
First time in last many years definition of Aam Admi changed. Instead of defining ‘Aam aadmi’ from income perspective, today CM of Delhi defined ‘Aam –Aadmi’, as a person who has a desire of honest governance & honest way of life. It will certainly upset and profoundly confuse the established political class which has not seen from this perspective. This electoral mandate can have significant impact on how our Political Leaders & Bureaucrats conduct themselves. This will pave the way for the intellectual, hard working, honest and simple man & women- without political ambitions to get power, but with ambition to serve people, to come in politics. Arvind Kejriwal has a shown the path.
Sure, There are ample challenges and roadblocks for anybody who wants to make this country a developed country. Some of the points are mentioned in the 18 point agenda of AAP. But in my opinion, there are certain things which can be immediately fixed and are most important. Judiciary and corruption needs immediate attention. Because , if you can catch the corrupts and deliver the justice immediately, it will clearly send a loud and clear message among the other members of bureaucracy and the existing system which is one of the best in the world will function efficiently :
Addressing Judiciary : Our courts are plagues with the backlog of many years and million cases. Still we see that the courts being closed thrice for vacations and on weekends also. With additional recruitments, can’t we have our courts working in two shifts like 8 to 2 and 2 to 8. It will automatically double the speed of case clearances. Moreover, the courts can function during vacations and on public holidays also by dividing judiciary in three batches which can work in rotation so that the work load on an individual will remain as it is today, but the case clearance will gain 3 times speed.
Addressing Corruption : It is one evil which almost everybody has faced. Some have faced it some have fought it. But it is growing day by day. It has changed the morale system. It has started to alter the role models of younger generation. Because of the power and money corrupt politicians and officers have gained, they are in many cases seen as role models to be followed. Implementation of strong Lokpal and doubling the existing staff in Anti-corruption units will definitely impact. Technology like CC TVs, hidden pen cameras, spectacle cameras etc. can be used. I will go to an extent that such devices can be given on rent for free to public, by government, so that they can actively participate in anti-corruption campaign.
There can be numerous ideas, and countless improvements that can be brought into the system. There has to be a will for improving the system. The idea is not to do it by one person or party but empower people, establish efficient systems and restore faith in the process so that the democracy can bloom in its real sense. But ultimately what really matters is who is at the helm. If the person at the helm is real leader with honest intention and competence to serve people, the country and society can grow and flourish despite of its system followed, be it democracy, autocracy or monarchy. It seems that politics is changing for good and it can get even better if good people come forward in all parties.
